Manufacturing Processes for Polymer Composite Flashcards
Also called “Closed Mold Process,” resin
transfer process employs a rigid mold
featuring inlets for resin infusion and
outlets for air release.
Resin Transfer Molding (RTM)
variation of the traditional RTM. In
this process, the vacuum is applied to an outlet
of the mold and the resin is drawn into the mold
by vacuum only.
Vacuum-Assisted Resin Transfer
Molding (VARTM)
Applying uniform pressure to the laminate before
curing enhances fiber consolidation and removes
unnecessary resin, air, and volatiles from the matrix.
Pressure is applied using a flexible diaphragm or bag.
Bag Molding
Bag Molding three fundamental methods for applying
pressure
pressure bag, vacuum
bag, and autoclave processing
s a high-volume, high-pressure
process appropriate for molding complicated, highstrength glass fiber reinforced products with either
thermoset or thermoplastic resin.
Compression Molding
specialized technique
employed in composite manufacturing, where
continuous fibers are precisely and automatically
wound onto a rotating mandrel or mold
Filament Winding
a continuous manufacturing process used to manufacture
constant cross-section shapes of any length.
● A low-cost process due to straightforward conversion of continuous fibers and
resin
Pultrusion
The resulting composite in Pultrusion
a fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP
