Manufacturing methods Flashcards
what are the 4 main manufacturing methods
(small to large in quantity) one-off production
batch production
mass production
continuous flow
what is one-off production?
only one manufactured at a time
very labor intensive
every product is different
combination on machine and hand methods used.
What type of products is one-off production used for?
tower structures
specialist jewelry
bespoke chairs
what is batch production?
when a small quantity of identical products are made labor intensive
jigs and templates are used to help aid in production
batches of a product can be made as often as required
what is batch production used for?
garden benches
special edition cars
batch manufactured socks
what is mass production?
used to make 100 - 1000s of standardised products
mass production often involves the assembly of individual components
uses repetitive tasks, means machines are usually used = smaller number of workers
saves time and cost
what is mass production used for?
pens
bottles
chairs
toothbrushes
what is continuous-flow production
high-volume production, machines run 24/7
eliminates the expense of stopping and restarting the production process
process is often automated and few workers are required
continuous- flow production is used for products that sell in bulk throughout the year - do not need to be frequently changed.
can be used in graphic products such as packaging which rarely changes
what is continuous flow used for?
bricks
screws
name 4 metal manufacturing methods
metal turning sand casting piercing and blanking die casting pressforming
name 4 plastic manufacturing techniques
injection molding compression molding blow molding vacuum forming rotational moulding
what manufacture method can be used on plastics and metals
extrusion
