What is varnish used for and what is it like?
Varnish is a finishing technique applied to wood. It is a clear liquid and can come in a gloss(shiny) or matt(dull) finish.
What is oil used for and what is it like?
Oil is used on wood to bring out the natural appearance of the wood but is expensive. Also keeps water out(protects the wood).
What is woodstain used for and what is it like?
Woodstain is used on wood to colour the wood, it dries quickly(water based) & doesn’t protect the wood but is cheap.
What is paint used for and what is it like?
Paint can be used on wood or metal. It protects the material and makes it look better. It is surface degreased and a primer is applied.
What is polish used for and what is it like?
Polish is used for metals and plastics and is a wax-type substance that is buffed up to a shine finish.
What is dip coat used for and what is it like?
Dip coat is used for metals and it applies a layer of plastic to the surface(done by heating up metal and dipping into a vat of powdered plastic).
What is galvanising used for and what is it like?
Galvanising is used for metals and it applies a thin layer of zinc to the metal surface(protects from rusting).
