Manufacturing - 1.4 Joining Methods Flashcards
How do you permanently join woods together?
Butt joint- wood is generally cut, fitted and held together by an adhesive.
Dowel Joint- a reinforced butt joint with a small piece of wood, called a dowel.
What are the 3 glues used with wooden joints?
- Hot glue gun- sets quickly but it’s not very strong.
- PVA- Polyvinylacetate- strong glue which takes several hours to dry. Most common type used.
- Cascamite- very strong glue which comes as a white powder which must be mixed with water. Takes several hours to dry.
Plastics are permanently joined by either of the three 3 adhesives and another method, what are they?
Adhesives: Tensol cement, Super glue, Hot glue (weak bond)
Plastics can be permanently joined by using rivets or through fusion.
What methods are used to permanently join metals together and also another method which used a tin/lead alloy to join metals together?
Riveting can be used to join metals together without requiring heat
Soft soldering is commonly used to join metals together with solder (a tin/ lead alloy). Flux is used to allow solder to flow into the joint. Solder is Athens heated to melt into the joint, this is a weak joint
What are the 2 methods used to join metals together with extreme heat?
Brazing- a copper/zinc alloy is used as solder, the solder melts at a high temperature to form a strong joint.
Welding- fusing together 2 pieces of metal with very high temperatures.
Gas welding: burning of two gases to produce the heat needed.
Arc/MIG welding: uses an electric current to produce the temperature needed. The heat of the current melts the electrode on to the metal, forming a weld.
