Manual & Ultrasonic Cleaning Flashcards
How is manual washing carried out?
- Water = 30-35C
- Neutral enzyme detergent
- Plastic brush
- Rinse with demin water + dry non-linting cloth
What are the 4 types of demineralised water?
- RO
- Distilled
- Deionised
- Sterile for irrigation
Why is demineralised water used?
Organic & mineral compounds may:
- Harm devices (limescale)
- Provide rough surfaces for microbe adhesion
What PPE is required for manual wash?
- Face mask
- Gloves (marigold type)
- Disposable gown
What devices are appropriate for manual washing?
Handpieces
do NOT put in ultrasonic
What are the functions of detergents?
Remove soil
hydrophobic end-soil, hydrophillic end-water
How do ultrasonic cleaners work?
- High frequency sound waves
- Micro-bubbles produced -> cavitation on implosion
- Energy released removes soil from surfaces
Why must an ultrasonic bath be degassed?
Oxygen inhibits cavitation
How are instruments loaded into the ultrasonic baths?
- Open hinged instruments
- No overlapping
When should an ultrasonic bath be drained?
- Every 4 hours
- When visibly soiled
How are instruments treated following ultrasonic cleaning?
Rinse with RO water + dried
How is a DAILY test carried out for an ultrasonic bath?
- Printout = check correct time, temp
- Sign and log in book
How is a WEEKLY test carried out for an ultrasonic bath?
- Daily test +
- Protein test strip
- -> Read results and log
How is a QUARTERLY test carried out for an ultrasonic bath?
Foil ablation test
- -> Erosion pattern should be similar on all strips
- -> Extent of erosion consistent
