Manual physiotherapy techniques Flashcards
1
Q
Three types of manual physiotherapy techniques used for secretion clearance?
A
- Percussion
- Vibration
- Rib springing
2
Q
Who can manual techniques be used for?
A
- Sedated/ventilated patients with retained secretions
- Low cognition / low GCS patients with retained secretions
- Patients who can tolerate it
3
Q
In what part of the respiratory cycle is percussion used?
A
Inhalation and exhalation
4
Q
In what part of the respiratory cycle are vibrations and rib springing used?
A
Exhalation (often used together)
5
Q
Precautions for manual physio?
A
- Rib fractures
- Osteoporosis
- Bronchospasm
- Low platelets and clotting factors
- Haemoptysis
6
Q
Contraindications for manual physio?
A
- Metastatic bone cancer
- Lung contusion
- Pulmonary embolism
- Unstable arrhythmias
- Extremely low platelets or clotting factors
- Patient unable to tolerate
7
Q
What position should the patient be in?
A
Best used in gravity assisted drainage positions or side lying
8
Q
How long to treat for:
- adults
- children
- infants?
A
- Adults: 15-20 mins
- Children: 10-15 mins
- Infants: 5-8 mins
(depends on how well tolerated)
9
Q
What should be monitored throughout treatment?
A
- Mucus plugging with acute desaturation
- Pain - grimacing, increased HR, swatting, moving
- Bronchospasm - reduced tidal vol, increased insp pressures, decreased saturations
- Bleeding - petechial haemorrhage on skin, haemoptysis
