General morph of mange mites
Have 4 pairs of legs (closely related to spiders)
Have: palps, chelators, hypostome, anal plate, spiracles in various places
What type of mites cause Mange?
Astigmatid
What are the 3 types of astigmatid mites
Sarcoptidae
Knemidokoptidae
Psoroptidae
These are permanent ectoparasites
Can cause allergic reactions
Life cycle: Egg– Larva– 1st nymph stage, 2nd nymph stage— adult
Sarcoptes/ Sarcoptidae
Have short legs- tarsus, praetarsus and ambulacrum which is tunnel-shaped
Are oviparous
Females burrow the skin- may be able to see the burrowing trail
Affect mammals
Boil in alkaline so that the chitinous part remains
Knemidokoptidae
Short legs- v. short praetarsus, ambulacrum that is shaped like a suction cup
Viviparous
Burrow skin
Affect birds
Psoroptidae
Long legs, segmeted praetarsus but.. 4th pair of legs are short Oviparous Supf on skin- pierce skin at base of hairs and suck lymph/exudate NON-burrowing

Psoroptes cuniculi- external ear canal
Psoroptes ovis- densely packed hair e.g chest
Chorioptes bovis- on lower parts of legs

Psoroptes ovis– densely haired skin
Chorioptes bovis– lower parts of legs/gluteal region

Psoroptes ovis– wooly parts– NOTIFIABLE

Acute
Chronic: thickening of skin, hyper/parakeratosis, older sows and boars
ZOONOTIC

Notoedres cati- face mange- serious symptoms that could lead to death
- has fingerprint like structure on its back
- may be able to see the egg inside females

- don’t try to remove, it’s very painful
