Stages of stress
- Alarm stage
- Resistance stage
- Exhaustion
Body releases adrenaline, (heart beats faster, breathing speeds up, muscles tense) this stage is also known as the “fight or flight” stage
Alarm stage
Body adapts to the continued presence of the stressor- lots of energy exerted. May cause irritability, decrease ability to handle added stress
Resistance stage
Body can no longer keep up with the demands placed on it.
Exhaustion
Body can no longer keep up with the demands placed on it. Physical/emotional resources depleted. Note: does not occur when each stress response, only is stressor occurs for a long time

Recognizing signs of stress
- Changes in thinking
- Behavioral changes
- Physical changes
- Emotional changes
Over/under eating, sleep problems, withdrawal from relationships, reckless

Inability to concentrate, excessive worrying, self-criticism, critical of others
Behavioral changes
Muscle tension, headache, upset stomach, increased sweating
Physical changes
Irritability, angry,impatient, nervous, crying
Emotional changes
