Pregnancy, Childbirth Flashcards
Only a few hundred sperm that enter the vagina reach the egg, and only one can fertilize it
Fertilization
The united egg and sperm
The zygote
The original cell divided to make 2 cells
Cell division
About 5 days after fertilization, the embryo reaches the uterus, where it floats free for a few days. By this time, it is made up of about 50 to 100 cells. The structure is no longer a solid mass of cells, but a sphere of cells surrounding a hollow center
The blastocyst
Once the blastocyst forms, it begins to attach itself to the wall of the uterus
Implantation
Fluid filled bag of thin tissue that develops around the embryo
Amniotic sac
Attachment holding the embryo to the wall of the uterus
Pacenta
“Embryo’s lifeline”. About 25 days after fertilization a rope like structure develops between the placenta and embryo
Umbilical cord
During pregnancy, how many more calories does a woman need to consume
300
Why should woman avoid alcohol or other drugs while pregnant?
These substances, even in small amounts, can harm or kill the developing baby, decrease the newborn’s chance to live, or cause lifelong problems
The blastocyst implants in the Fallopian tube or elsewhere in the abdomen, instead of in the uterus
Ectopic pregnancy
The death of an embryo or fetus in the first 20 weeks of pregnancy
Miscarriage
Is characterized by high blood pressure, swelling of the wrists and ankles, and high levels of protein in the urine
Preeclampsia
Work performed by mother’s body to push the fetus out
Labor
Contractions of the uterus continue and the baby is pushed out
Delivery of baby
Contractions of the uterus push out the placenta, also called the afterbirth
Delivery of after birth
A cesarean section (C-section) in which the doctor makes an incision in the lower abdomen into the uterus. Then the doctor removes the baby and placenta
Surgical delivery
Delivery of baby before the 37th week of pregnancy, before before fully developed
Premature birth
A baby the weighs less than 5.5lbs. Baby is not fully developed
Low birthweight
Why are women susceptible to sadness or depression during the Postpartum period
Because of hormonal changes and fatigue
Explain what happens after birth to 18 months
The baby has probably learned to sit, crawl, stand and walk
What happens after birth from 18 to 3 years?
Plays alongside others, Learns many words, looses baby fat, limbs get longer, appetite decreases
What happens from 3-6 years after birth
Plays with others, has lots of energy, become independent and active, muscles grow, energy is high, and the curious child is “into everything,” communication skills advance rapidly
