What is a Tall Structure?
Have long chains of command, decisions take a long time, lots of layers, short span of control.
What are the advantages of Tall Structures?
As there are lots of layers of management, there are more opportunities for promotion. This will motivate employees.
As the span of control is narrow, managers can monitor employees more closely.
What are Flat Structures?
Only have a few levels, horizontal communication, wide span of control.
What are the advantages of Flat Structures?
People are given more freedom and responsibility.
As little layers, communication is more efficient.
What are the disadvantages of Flat Structures?
If span of control is too wide, mangers find it hard to manage effectively and can become demotivated.
Horizontal communication can be slow in a flat structure due to the large number of people in a layer/level.
What is Induction Training?
An introduction to the business. Includes history, background, key police’s and procedures.
Why is Induction Training important?
If it is not effective or not long enough, the new employee could make mistakes that could cost the business money.
If the employee is not fully supported at the beginning, they may become overwhelmed or demotivated and unable to work effectively. This could lead to lower productivity or poor quality work.
