Q

Explain the waste hierarchy

A

The waste hierarchy shows how reducing reusing and recycling materials can help prevent waste. Increased reused and recycling are good for the environment. Although not as good as reducing. Fewer resources and less energy and needed if reuse and recycling.

Q

Benefits of wind power

A

Good for the environment as it doesn’t produce any carbon emissions.
The wind farms use inexhaustible wind energy. The turbines at walney farm can produce energy for 80% of the year and will have a lifespan of about 20 years.
It helps the uk be less independent of non renewable resources. Which it has to buy from other countries
They will produce energy relatively cheap - certainly no more expensive than non renewable sources.

Q

Disadvantage of wind power

A

They can be harmful of local wildlife as the turbines can be creating their own electrical field
Some people also find the wind turbines ugly and do not like seeing these from shore, this could reduce money generated by tourism in some places. However at walney farm the turbines are 14km from the shore - difficult to see.
The turbines take up a lot of money to set up, walney wind farm cost over 1000000 to set up. However, it should bring in a constant return for over 20 years of minimal maintenance.
There always needs to be a back up system - because there will be no wind and there will be days where there are too much wind for the turbines to be used safely

Q

Impacts of mass tourism
Economic impacts

A

Positive - creates jobs for local people. This income can be spent in local shops and services to boost economy. Malta has only 380,000 residents but received 1.2 million tourists in 2011.Tourism generated more than 650 million - which is 25% of the GDP
Negative - MNCS own hotel chains - lots of profits sent abroad. Thailand estimated that 70% of all money spent by tourists ended up leaving Thailand.

Q

Impacts of tourism
Cultural impacts

A

Preservation of historical or cultural landmarks - adds value to the traditions/culture of that area.
For example, in Egypt the government realized that the pyramids were a huge tourist attraction and so restricted building close to them and have spent millions of pounds protecting them. This would not have happened if they had not been such a tourist attraction.

Negative impacts - some western tourists behave in an inappropriate ways with no understanding or respect for the culture of the country they are visiting.
This has resulted in the tourists getting arrested and in local people being offended. It has even led to diplomatic rows between governments. In Hawaii, many tourists don’t have many interests in the true meaning of the hula dances and simply view them as a form of entertainment. This offends the Hawaiian people.

Q

The Nam Ha project has help the environment in a number of ways -

A

Guided and trekkers help to deter poachers from killing the rare species in the forest meaning they are being preserved.
Locals have become tour guides which also reduces the amount of poachers or hunters.
It is protecting the habitats of endangered animals and plants like gibbons, Asian elephants and 288 bird species.

However

There have been concerns that local culture is being lost as more locals are being exposed to western lifestyle and dress.
As the amount of visitors increase (they already have from 1000 to 4000 per year) there will be greater pressure to build more hotels to “western standard” and more pressure on natural resources like water.
By its very nature, eco tourism is of a very small scale - has to be therefore is a limited amount of money to be made from it.
