Managing Earths Resouces Flashcards
Any resource that can be used to transfer or transform energy. Fossil fuels, bio fuels, wind power ect.
Energy resource
Able to be maintained at a certain rate or level
Sustainable
A long term, well established difference in weather patterns.
Climate change
The process that will result in whatever carbon used is balanced by the removal (storage) of carbon
Carbon neutral
Without oxygen. ‘Living without air’.
Anaerobic
A machine in which the Kinetic energy of a moving fluid (water, steam, air) is transformed into mechanical energy using a rotor blade. This mechanical energy can be the transformed into electrical energy.
Turbine
Energy resources that, once used, cannot be readily replaced within a reasonable time.
Non-renewable energy resources
Fuels formed by the anaerobic decomposition of dead organisms. Includes coal, oil, petroleum, natural gas. Coal is the main energy resource used to generate electricity in NSW.
Fossil fuels
Electricity generated using the energy contained in the nucleus of an atom.
Nuclear power
Energy resources that, once used, can be readily replaced within a reasonable time.
Renewable energy resources
Fuel made using animal or plant material. Example: wood, ethanol (made using corn or sugarcane) added to unleaded petrol
Biofuel
Electricity generated by using steam produced by heat emanating from the molten core of the earth
Geothermal power
Electricity generated using falling water.
Hydroelectricity
Propulsion mechanism (launch space shuttle) or electricity generated using hydrogen. E.g: space shuttle, hydrogen fuel cell cars.
Hydrogen fuel
Electricity generated by the motion of the waves.
Wave power
