what is an autocratic management style? and what are characteristics
- when the manager tells the staff what decisions have been made.
characteristics:
- motivates through threats
- expect compliance and obedience, one way communication
- centralised decision making
what are the advantages and disadvantages of an autocratic management style?
advantages:
- directions clearly defined
- expectations are detailed and precise
- decisions are amde quickly
disadvantages:
- no employee input
- job satisfaction decrease, abseenteism increase
- conflict may increase (workers competing for the approval of manager)
what is the persuasive management style and what are the characteristics?
- where the manager attempts to sell decisions to staff
characterisitics:
- centralised, communication is one way
- convince employees it is in their best interest
what are the advantages and disadvantages of a persuasive management style?
advantages:
- managers gain trust and support
- workers approach tasks more positively
- acceptance of negative when beenfits of decision is explained
disadvantages:
- attitudes and trust remain negative
- communication is still poor
- employees denied full participation
what is the management style consultative and what are characteristics?
-the manager consults the employees before making decisions
characteristics:
- seeks opinion of employees
- two way communication
- employees can be motivated through greater involvement in decision making process
what are the advantages and disadvantages of the consultative management style?
advantages:
- large pool of ideas
- increased motivation = efficiency and better results
-employees take ownership
disadvantages:
- time consuming
- employees may feel undervalued if ideas are overlooked
- some issues are not suitable of this style
when is the consultative management style effective?
when a new operating procedure is being introduced or some business change implemented.
what is the management style participative and what are the characteristics?
-the manager unites with the employees to make decisions together
characteristics:
-two way communication
- managers recognise the strength of the staff
- employees will have a greater committment to business objectives
when is participative effective?
when the business is operating in an environemnt undergoing rapid change.
advantages and disadvantages of a participative management style?
advantage:
- trust is high
- motivation and job satisfaction is optimal
- high levels of commitment
disadvantages:
- time consuming
- quality of decisison can suffer due to compromises
- internal conflict can arise
what is the laissez-faire management style and what are the characteristics?
-employees assume total responsibility for, and control of, workplace operations
characteristics:
- no central role
- decentralised
- manager still set objectives and are responsible for performance of the business
when is laissez-faire effective
-for creative work or research, with employees who are hgihly qualified or talented
what are advantages and disadvantages of laissez-faire?
advantages:
- employees feel sense of ownership = improve morale
- teamwork
- communication is open
disadvantages:
- loss of control
- possible misues of business’ resources
- personal conflicts
