Management strategies Flashcards
What are the 3 main types of coastal management strategies
Hard engineering
Soft engineering
Integrated sustainable approach
What are the main advantages and disadvantages of hard engineering
Very short term effective
Unsustainable in the long term
Give 3 examples of hard engineering strategies
- Sea wall - concrete wall
- Gabion - rock filled cage
- Groynes - fences right angle to coast
What are the advantages and disadvantages of a sea wall
Long lasting and effective
Prevent flooding and erosion
Can be £5000 per metre (expensive)
Unnatural
If one part of system breaks, it is at risk
What are the advantages and disadvantages of gabion’s
Effective and Cheap
Prevent erosion
Ugly and dangerous to birds
What are the advantages and disadvantages of groynes
Traps sediment and stops erosion
Cheap
Starve downdraft beaches of sediment
Can rot easily and be dangerous
What are the main advantages and disadvantages of soft engineering
Long term effective and sustainable
Take a long time to come into action
Give 2 examples of soft engineering strategies
- Dune regeneration
- Beach nourishment
What are the advantages and disadvantages of dune reservation
Natural and act as a barrier from land and sea, reducing flooding
Can take long to form
Give some methods of dune regeneration
- Replant vulnerable areas
- Restrict access
- Selective grazing
What are the advantages and disadvantages of beach nourishment
Replacing material to make wider, taller beach, reduces wave energy and erosion
Imported sediments may not react well to environment
What are the 2 types of integrated sustainable approaches
SMP
ICZM
Give some context for SMP’s
Each UK sediment cell, has a SMP to identify the natural processes and human activities in the area. They are extremely detailed and want to ensure each sediment cell remains a closed system
What are the 4 methods of management that SMP’s use
- Advance the line
- Hold the line
- Do nothing
- Retreat the line
Give some context for ICZM’s
Aim to manage the coast as a whole, rather than a sediment cell.
