Management of the Amazon Rainforest in Brazil Flashcards
What are the 4 methods of protecting the rainforest in Brazil?
- Strip forestry
- Agroforestry
- Restricting deforestation through the use of permits.
- Selective logging.
How does Strip Forestry work?
What are the problems with it?
It involves chopping down a strip of the forest a time instead of a large area.
This allows the forest to replenish itself without getting damaged too badly.
Habitats get slightly damaged.
Strips in the forest create access points for illegal loggers.
How does Agroforestry work?
What are the problems with it?
Using the forest’s natural products to farm and create a living.
Growing crops within the forest. E.g.: cocoa, nuts, bananas and rubber tapping from rubber trees.
Harder work than logging.
Small income per year.
It’s a very long-term investment.
How does the Permit system work?
What are the problems with it?
Permits are given out by IBAMA. These are needed to take logs.
Illegally taken logs lead to big fines.
IBAMA monitors the forest to stop the illegal loggers.
It’s difficult to monitor because it’s over such a large area.
