Management of Impaled Objects Flashcards
1
Q
Introduction
A
The goal for prehospital care is to limit the motion of the impaled object as soon as possible to minimize additional damage.
2
Q
Key Points
A
- Do not attempt to remove an impaled object as efforts to do so may precipitate uncontrolled internal hemorrhage, which may lead to exsanguinations or further injury to underlying structures
- Control hemorrhage by direct pressure, though do not apply direct pressure to the impale object itself, or on immediately adjecent tissues
- Do not try to shorten an impaled object unless required to facilitate movement to the hospital as any motion of the object may damage surrounding tissues
- Stabilize the object in place w/ bulky dressing and splint to prevent motion
