Magnesium sulphate

- Controls fits

A
- Loading dose of 4g given over 5 - 10 minutes

How to check for magnesium toxicity?
A
- Check reflexes every hour ( knee reflexes)

Signs of magnesium toxicity?
A
- Confusion
- Loss of reflexes
- Respiratory depression
- Hypotension

A
Calcium gluconate over 10 minutes

What monitoring is done and how often?

- Pulse
- BP
- Respiratory rates
- O2 sats
Done every 15 minutes

A
- Fetal CTG continously monitored
- Deliver fetus once mom is stable
- Vaginal delivery is not contraindicated if cervix is favourable

How should 3rd stage of labour be managed
A
- Oxytocin rather than Syntometrine or ergometrine because of increase in blood pressure
