What is management?
Managing is organization: pulling things together and along in a general direction to bring about long-term organizational survival
What do organizational activities have to be?
Organizational activities have to be shaped so that organization sufficiently satisfies the requirements of all those parties who must supply the organization with resources to enable it to continue in existence
What does shaping human activity invlove?
Involves setting up systems and procedures, rules, rewards, and structures.
What is Managerialism?
The idea that managers posses a unique sense of knowledge that empowers them with the right to manage
What are the 3 key themes?
- Nice vs Nasty management
- Maintaining Coninuity
- Rational Control
What is Nice vs Nasty management?
Are managers helpful figures who aim to motivate workers and make an organization run more effectively or are they exploitive corporate shills who aid in the process of dehumanizing and demeaning the labour force?
What is Maintaining Coninuity?
Should organizations use the best strategy to maximize their profits or should they remain flexible and open to change as new?
What is Rational Control?
Is it better to manage via explicit/rational forms of control (explicit rules and regulations) or through norms, values, or implicit forms of control like expectations?
