Prevention types

A
  • Primary: avoid disease e.g. SNAP, immunisation, safe sex. Prevention before disease occurs.
  • Secondary: avoiding damage irreversible damage via the early detection and prompt intervention to correct departures from good health or treat the early signs of disease e.g. cervical screening, blood monitoring
  • Tertiary: some overlap with secondary. Avoid recurrence, complications, disability, dependence in an individual with a disease e.g. aspirin in stroke.
