what is managed retreat?
removing current defences and allowing the sea to flood the land behind it.
what does managed retreat do?
•undoes human activity
•removes coastal protection
•allowing areas once protected from flooding to be flooded and eroded by the sea
•this changes the shaps of the coastline
what are some advantages of managed retreat?
•cheap (after compensation)
•doesnt need maintenance
•can create new coastal habitats
what are some disadvantages of managed retreat?
•conflict, flooding farmland can affect the farmers livelihood
•salt water can have a negative effecf on existing ecosystem
•not possible everywhere, tends to occur where there is low value land
what is sustainable management?
management that meets the needs of the present without reducing the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.
