Man technology Flashcards
Runner
In manufacturing, a channel or passage in a mold through which molten material flows to reach the cavity where the final part or product is formed.
Rake face
The surface of a cutting tool that faces the workpiece during machining, inclined to control the cutting action and chip formation.
Thread stripping
Damage to the threads of a fastener during tightening, resulting in reduced holding strength or failure of the joint.
Columnar grain
A microstructure with elongated grains perpendicular to the surface of a solidifying metal ingot or casting, affecting mechanical properties.
Blanking
A process to cut flat shapes from sheet metal or other stock materials using a punch and die set in a single operation.
Cold shots
Defects in a casting caused by solidified metal particles becoming trapped, resulting from improper gating or pouring practices.
Cupola
A furnace for melting iron and other metals in foundry operations, typically fueled by coke or charcoal with air blown in for combustion.
.STL file
A digital file format used in CAD and 3D printing, representing three-dimensional surface geometry as interconnected triangles.
SCARA
A type of robotic arm used in assembly and packaging, with multiple joints designed for high-speed and precise horizontal movement.
Ingot
A solid block of metal cast from molten material and used as raw material for further processing such as forging or rolling.
Residual stress
Internal stress remaining in a material after the original cause has been removed, influencing mechanical behavior and stability.
Wing nut
A fastener with two large wings allowing for hand tightening without tools, commonly used in applications requiring frequent adjustments.
Six sigma
A methodology for process improvement and quality management aiming to minimize defects and variation using data-driven decision-making.
Misrun
A casting defect where molten metal fails to fill the mold cavity completely, often due to inadequate pouring temperature or gating design.
Composite sizing
A textile manufacturing process applying a protective coating or finish to yarns before weaving or knitting to improve handling and performance of the fabric.
Cupola
A cupola is a type of furnace used for melting iron and other metals in foundry operations. It consists of a vertical cylindrical shaft lined with refractory material and is typically fueled by coke or charcoal, with air blown in to facilitate combustion.
