Man-Made Boards Flashcards
What are the three types of plywood?
Interior, exterior and marine
What are the three main types of man-made boards we need to know?
Plywoods
Medium density fibreboards (MDF)
Particle board
How is plywood made?
Plywood is an assemblage of wood veneers bonded together to produce a flat sheet, with a least three plies (layers) and the grain of alternate plies running at right angles, with the best looking veneers on the outside
How is MDF made?
Wood fibres are bonded together with synthetic resin adhesives and cured under heat and pressure into boards of varying shapes and sizes and often coated with a decorative veneer
How is particle board made?
A mat of individual wood particles is coated in adhesive resin and pressed together into a finished panel with the wood fibres running in all directions and then coated with a decorative veneer
What are the properties of plywoods?
Increased stability, high impact resistance, surface dimensional stability, high strength to weight ratio, chemical resistance
Marine plywood is the strongest of them and is also waterproof due to being constructed using waterproof adhesives
What are the properties of MDF?
Even and low density throughout, uniform strength, some can be water resistant depending on the adhesive used but generally have poor water resistance, easy workability however a large amount of sawdust is produced
What are the properties of particle board?
Differing levels of strength dependent upon grade, uniform strength and density in all directions, generally low water resistance unless certain adhesives used
What are the two ways you can get MDF?
Plain or veneered
