Mammary Gland Histology Flashcards
What makes up the areolar region?
sweat glands, sebaceous glands, glands of Montgomery, CT, SM, lactiferous ducts surround by CT and separated into lobules that empty into the nipple
What is the region of the lobule that makes secretory product?
the acini which empty into the intraolbular collecting duct and into the lactiferous duct.
What directly surround the acinus?
intralobular stoma surrounded by interlobar stroma.
What hormones influence development and maturation of the mammary gland?
estrogen and progesterone
When does the mammary gland get activated?
During pregnancy
When does the mammary gland reach full maturation?
during pregnancy under the influence of PRL, estrogens, progesterone and glucocorticoids
What causes milk secretion and ejection?
PRL causes secretion and oxytocin causes ejection
What happens to the mammary gland at menopause?
glandular components are replaced with CT and involute
What are the characteristics of an inactive mammary gland?
lots of adipose and CT, few acini
What are the characteristics of a mammary gland at pregnancy?
less CT, more abundant acini and proliferation of the epithelial cells surrounding the acini
What are the characteristics of mammary gland during lactation?
more acini with small trabecule of CT
What are the characteristics of mammary gland during lactation?
more acini with small trabecule of CT
