Mammals Quiz 8 Flashcards
Ecology
study and relationship between living organisms and their environment
Environment
the sum of all external factors that impact an organism including:
- biotic (living) factors
- abiotic (nonliving) factors
Poulation
the members of one species in a given environment
Community
all living organisms in a given area, all populations
Ecosystem
the complex of living and nonliving environmental components interacting and closely interdependent in any fairly stable situation (big picture ie. an entire forest)
Trophic Levels:
Producers
- autotrophs (produce their own food)
- usually green
- photosynthesize (light into energy)
- base of the food chain
Trophic Levels:
Consumer
- heterotrophs (cannot produce its own food)
- usually animals
- primary, secondary, or omnivores
Trophic Levels:
Primary Consumer
-herbivores (only eat plants)
Trophic Levels:
Secondary Consumer
-carnivores (only eat animals)
Trophic Levels:
Omnivore
-eats plants and animals
Trophic Levels:
Decomposers
- usually bacteria/fungi
- breakdown waste
- recycle chemicals back into the ecosystem to be reused
- very important in ecosystems
Food Chain
Made up of Sun, Producers, Consumers, and Decomposers
Food Web
complexity of food chains from Sun to Producers of various types, consumers of various types, and decomposers of various types (shows the transference of energy)
Ecological Pyramid
- at each step of the food chain there are fewer and fewer organisms
- there are more producers than primary consumers
- there are more primary consumers than secondary consumers
- at each step energy is converted and some is lost as heat
- food chains are typically short
