Mammal One Flashcards
Are mammals endothermic or ectothermic?
able to maintain own body heat
Name four characteristics of mammals:
hair, live birth, endothermic, four chambered heart, specialized teeth, mammary glands
Name the three types of mammalian reproduction, define each type and give at least one example of an animal that has that type.
Monotreme - egg laying (Platapus)
Marsupial - born pre embriotic - travel to pouch to complete development (Kangaroo/Koala)
Placental - uterine connection (Elephants)
How might marsupial reproduction be an adaptation?
protection of young, dealing with limited resources, have young in multiple stages of development, if lose a baby not a catastrophy
How is hibernation different from torpor?
Hibernation - long term, body temperature down, can’t arouse animal
Torpor - short term, not deep change in body temperature, can arouse out of sleep
Match the following methods of locomotion to their description:
terrestrial, aquatic, plantigrade, digitigrade, unguligrade, arboreal, brachiating, fossorial
Arboreal - live in trees
Digitigrade - walk on tips of toes (antelope)
Brachiating - swing through trees hand over hand
Plantigrade - walk with heel on ground (bears)
Aquatic - lives mainly in water
Terrestrial - lives mostly on ground
Unguligrade - walk on their toes (cat)
Fossorial - adapted for digging
What is something you would tell a visitor about the echidna? Explain.
is a egg laying mammal
What are two ways in which an echidna is different from a porcupine?
echidna - not releasable barbs, lay eggs
porcupine - barbs release, don’t lay eggs
What would you say to a visitor who complained that the koalas on exhibit are ―always sleeping‖?
need to conserve resources so they are resting - digesting eucalyptus which is difficult to do so they slow way down, low caloric food, can be very quick when need be
List and describe at least three adaptations of red kangaroos.
long tail used for balance, hind legs propelling forward in very efficient way - to move fast, nocturnal - to stay out of heat of the day
Circle one: An orangutan is mainly arboreal or terrestrial.
arboreal
Name a primate at the zoo that is endangered and state why.
Orangutan - habitat loss is extreme due to palm trees - palm oil
Gorilla - habitat destruction due to use of Kulton in electronics
What is one action you could recommend to a visitor who asked how he or she could help protect primates?
Don’t use palm oil products unless you know it comes from a sustainable source
Recycle electonics
Chimpanzees are well known for their use of tools. Is this an instinctive behavior? Explain.
learned behavior
culturally acquired by watching
Choose three primates. List one adaptation for each and explain why it is an adaptation.
Gibbon - rub pads on rear end for sitting in trees
Chimpanzees - structural adaptation to use tools
Lemur - obtain nectar by using long snouts and tongues to reach deep into the flower
