Conservation Flashcards
Discuss what conservation means.
conscious use of natural resources
Actively trying to protect natural resources to ensure future existence
Conscious use of natural resources
Planned management of natural resources
Discuss what stewardship means. Please give examples.
Respect demonstrated to all living organisms and their habitats
Recognize humans are a part of nature and must use resources to survive and do so wisely
Avoid compromising actions
Pick up, recycle trash, dog stuff, educate
Discuss what sustainability means. Give an example.
Use resources so some are left over and not depleted
Put into place procedures which ensure replacement such as regrowth of timber
Example - limit number of animals to hunt - hunting regulations
What is an endangered species?
Species in danger of extinction in all or significant portion of its range
Why save endangered species? Give specific examples.
all species are part of an ecosystem
extinction is forever
All Interdependent
Part of history and heritage
What is the main reason species become endangered?
habitat loss and destruction
habitat disruption
What impact does wildlife trade have on species worldwide?
places stress on species already in trouble
endangers many species
Which country is the largest consumer of wildlife?
United States
What is the Endangered Species Act?
It is illegal to import or sell any listed or endangered animals or parts of.
Federal law and protection
What is an SSP? Define and discuss.
Species Survival Plan
manages captive breeding of endangered animals
creates healthy demographically sustainable, genetically diverse population
Perhaps re-introduction
Name an endangered species found at the Aquarium, Botanic Garden or Zoo, and discuss
the major reasons they are endangered, their current status in the wild, and possible ways to
protect it.
Snow Leopard - critically endangered in the wild, send our cubs to different AZA accredited zoos around the world, education, raise awareness
Rhinoceros - habitat loss because of human population growth, wildlife trade, horns, hides, hooves and other body parts - also traditional Chinese medicine
Describe the role of aquariums, botanic gardens and zoos in protecting endangered species.
Include at least one example of work being done at the BioPark on behalf of endangered
aquatic animals.
Role - to protect animals, educate public
Breeding for genetically diverse population through SSP plans with other AZA fecilities
A visitor comments, ―The problems are too big. There is nothing I can do to make a
difference.‖ How would you reply in a way that encourages action, stewardship and
conservation? (You can relate your answer to specific species or give general information.)
each person can do a small part and as a whole we make a difference
Don’t dispose of hazardous substances down drain or in trash
Use cloth not paper napkins
Recycle
Plant native trees and bushes
Use public transportion
Why do you think we, as residents of New Mexico, should or should not be concerned
with global conservation issues?
Interdependent World
you can’t do anything without effecting something
