What is MALT histologically similar to and what is it that is similar? What is not similar?
lymph nodes
they have germinal centers in the lymphoid follicle
they are different from a lymph node in that they don’t have a capsule
What structures are included in MALT?
tonsils (3 kinds)
Peyer’s patches
walls of the appendix
Located in the posterior portion of the oral cavity
palatine tonsils
located at the base of the tongue
lingual tonsils
the back wall of the nasopharynx (superior throat)
pharyngeal tonsils (aka adenoids)
located in the wall of the ileum of the small intestine
Peyer’s patches (aka aggregated lymphoid nodules)
this seemingly useless appendage is actually rich in lymphoid follicles
walls of the appendix
