Lymph Circulation Flashcards
What is lymph similar to and what is the exception?
lymph is similar to plasma except there is less protein because most proteins are too large to get pushed out of the capillaries
What are there more of in lymph vs plasma?
more white blood cells in lymph than plasma
What are the 6 phases for the flow through vessels?
interstitial space to lymphatic capillaries to collecting lymphatic vessels to lymphatic trunks to lymphatic ducts to subclavian veins (lymph passes through lymph nodes along the way)
How many mechanisms are there for the movement of lymph?
3
What are the 3 topics for the mechanisms for the movement of lymph?
skeletal muscle contractions
changes in pressure
smooth muscle contractions
Mechanisms for the movement of lymph:
What happens when the skeletal muscle contracts?
it milks the collecting lymphatic vessels
Mechanisms for the movement of lymph:
What happens when the pressure changes?
changes in pressure during inhalation and exhalation (respiratory pump)
Mechanisms for the movement of lymph:
What happens when the smooth muscle contracts?
smooth muscle in the lymphatic vessels reflexively contracts when the vessel is filled with fluid
Mechanisms for the movement of lymph:
Where does the smooth muscle contract and when?
in the lymphatic vessels
when the vessel is filled with fluid
