75% of the land is arid or semi arid which leads to drought(no crops or water)

Only 50% of the population has access to clean water (privatised system doesn’t reach the poorest people)

Water supply is privatised so the water industry regularly fails to provide poorest people in rural areas with water.
What is water aid and what has it been doing
WaterAid have been working in Mali since 2000. WaterAid are an NGO (non-government organisation, or charity)
How is it sustainable (diarrhoea)
Deaths by diarrhoea have reduced by 60% (socially sustainable as it improves health)
How is it sustainable (type of aid)
It is long term development aid which helps them develop by themselves.
How is it sustainable (teaching)
local people are taught how to maintain the systems – less reliant on aid.
How is it sustainable (hygiene)
Local people taught about hygiene and make money from selling soap
