- The long axis of each testes is VERTICAL Testes are located caudal to the sigmoid flexure
- Scrotum is elongated/pendulous
- Perineal
Accessory sex glands:
- AMPULLAE (not present)
- VESCULAR (large/lobulated)
- PROSTATE
- BULBOURETHRAL (very large)
- FIBROELASTIC PENIS
(firm even when not erect) - GLANS PENIS
(small, twisted end) - PREPUCE
(has a pouch which collects urine, secretions and dead cells = smell of the boar)
Stallion Reproductive
Produce sperm 2 testes 2 epididymis 2 ductus deferens Scrotum Accessory sex glands Urethra Penis Prepuce
- The long axis of each testis is HORIZONTAL
- Held close to the abdominal wall
Accessory sex glands: - AMPULLAE (well developed)
- VESICULAR (pear shaped/ hollow
- PROSTATE
- BULBOURETHRAL
- MUSCULOCAVERNOUS PENIS
(flaccid when not erect) - GLANS PENIS
(have a urethral process) - PREPUCE
(double fold; 2 layers surround the penis when it is retracted
Basic male reproductive tract
2 testes 2 epididymis 2 ductus deferens Scrotum Accessory sex glands Urethra Penis Prepuce
Testes
Basic structure the same
Contains mass of seminiferous tubules separated by interstitial tissue
Seminiferous tubules are lined with spermatogenic and sertoli cells
Stallion testes
long axis of testis is horizontal
held close to the abdominal wall
Boar Testes
long axis of each testis is vertical
caudal to the sigmoid flexure
ventral to the anus
perineal
Accessory sex glands Boar
Ampullae - not present
Vesicular glands - large and lobulated
Prostate gland
Bulbourethral gland - very large
Accessory sex glands Stallion
Ampullae - well developed
Vesicular glands - pear shaped and hollow
Prostate gland
Bulbourethral gland
Ampullae
enlargement of the last part of the ductus deferens.
Well developed in the stallion. Not present in the boar
Vesicular glands
Paired glands.
Pear shaped and hollow in the stallion.
In the boar are lobulated and of a considerable size.
Prostate gland
unpaired gland which surrounds the urethra and has multiple ducts which empty into the urethra.
It produces an alkaline solution that gives semen its characteristic smell.
Bulbourethral glands
Paired glands on either side of the urethra
These are very large in the boar.
Stallion Penis
Musculocavernous penis
which has a predominance of blood sinuses instead of connective tissue.
This means the stallions penis is flaccid when not errect.
Boar Penis
Fibroelastic penis
The trabeculae of the tunica albuginea make up the bulk of the penis which makes the penis firm even when not errect.
Glans Penis Boar
The glans penis of the boar is small and has a twisted end.
