Digestive System Flashcards
Pig Digestive System
NON-RUMINANT:
- 1 stomach (containing cardiac sphincter, cardia, fundus)
MOUTH:
- Hard, stiff lips
- Tongue is covered with MM’s
PHARYNX:
- Has a pharyngeal diverticulum which opens into the pharynx
SMALL INTESTINE:
- Duodenum
- Jejunum
- Ileum
LARGE INTESTINE:
- Ascending, descending and terminal colon
RECTUM:
- Terminal part
Cow Digestive System
RUMINANT:
- 4 stomachs (abomasum, reticulum, rumen and omasum)
MOUTH:
- No upper incisiors; hard pad of tissue
- Hard, stiff lips
- Tongue is covered with MM’s
- Use their tongue as a prehensile organ
LIVER:
- Liver is pushed to the right due to the reticulorumen
SMALL INTESTINE:
- Duodenum
- Jejunum
- Ileum
LARGE INTESTINE:
- Caecum (provides further space for microbial digestion)
- Large intestine forms a double spiral
RECTUM:
- Terminal part
List all the structures of the non ruminant digestive system
Mouth (teeth, tongue and salivary glands)
Pharynx (tonsils)
Oesophagus
Stomach (cardia, fundus, body, pyloric region)
Small Intestine (duodenum, jejenum, ileum)
Large Intestine (caecum, colon, rectum, anal canal)
Non ruminant stomach
cardia, fundus, body, pyloric region
Animal mouth
Lips - Stiff and hard in cattle and pigs
Oral cavity -
Hard Palate -
Formed by horizontal elements of the incisive, maxillary and palatine bones and is covered by thick mucous membrane
Soft Palate-
Comprised of muscle and mucosa
Pharynx
Caudal to oral and nasal cavity
Lined by mucous membrane and surrounded by muscles.
Divided into:
Nasopharynx, oropharynx and Laryngopharynx
Muscles on the walls are responsible for directing food and air to oesophagus and the trachea respectively.
Pig = Pharyngeal diverticulum - that opens into the dorsal wall of the pharynx near the beginning of the oesophagus. – Need to take care not to put stomach tubes or meds delivered via a balling gun into this space.
Oesophagus
Muscular tube
Lined with mucous membrane which is folded to allow dilation during swallowing.
Runs from pharynx, enters the thorax and continues into the abdominal cavity where is joins the stomach.
