Male reproductive system Flashcards
What are the functions of the testicles?
To produce sperm and the male sex hormone testosterone
What passes through the penis?
Urine and semen
What happens during sexual stimulation?
The arteries dilate and the penis becomes erect as the spongy tissues fill with blood.
The arteries filled with blood compress the veins and prevent blood from leaving the penis. Since blood is flowing into the penis faster than it is leaving, the penis lengthens, swells and hardens.
What does the swelling of the penis allow?
The penis to get closer to the cervix to release the sperm necessary for fertilization
What is ejaculation?
the expulsion of semen (sperm cells and fluid) from the penis.
Through what does expulsion/ejaculation occur?
The small contraction of small involuntary muscles
How much semen is released during a normal ejaculation?
2-5mL of semen, which contains an average of 350 million sperm cells
What does every hormone carry?
A message containing specific instructions made to target specific cells
Which glands are necessary for puberty and fertility in men?
The pituitary gland and testicles
What does the pituitary gland produce?
Follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) Luteinizing hormone (LH) Growth hormone (GH)
What do the testicles produce?
Testosterone and sperm cells
Why does the pituitary gland play an important role in puberty in boys?
Mainly because it produces a growth hormone
What does GH stimulate?
The development of almost all tissues in the body, especially the muscles and bones
When does the pituitary gland make more GH in boys?
At 12 years old
What does the body increase in production at age 12?
GH, FSH, LH
