Male Reproductive System Flashcards
Seminal vesicles (m)
Gland- Nutrition and mobility (activates sperm), produces fluid that is rich in vitamins and sugar
Prostate (m)
Gland- thins out sperm for movement and adds citric acid for energy, also secretes an alkaline fluid
Bulbourethral (Cowper’s) (m)
Gland- neutralizes acidic urethra and lubricates path, also secretes mucous
Scrotum
Flap (sac) of skin that houses the testes, helps to maintain temperature (about 5 or 3 degrees less)
Penis
Delivers sperm, shaft of spongy, erectile tissue surrounding the urethra
Seminiferous tubules
where sperm is formed
Epididymis
sperm cells mature as they travel through this
Ductus (vas) deferens
propels sperm towards the ejaculatory duct
Semen
a mixture of sperm cells an accessory gland secretions
Spermatogenesis steps
Spermatogonium, primary spermatocyte, secondary spermatocytes, 4 spermatotids, spermiogenesis, sperm
Pathway of sperm
Seminiferous tubules, epididymis, ductus deferens, ampilla (waiting room), urethra
Testosterone
Responsible for sperm production and secondary sex characteristics, produced in interstitial cells of testis
Spermatogenesis
Sperm production
Spermatogonia (gonia = one)
Stem cells
Spermiogenesis
Maturing into full sperm
Parts of sperm
Head (nucleus + DNA + enzymes, breaks into egg
Midpiece (mitochondria)
Tail (movement)
Luteinizing Hormone (LH)
Produced by the anterior pituitary gland, stimulates release of testosterone
Follicle Stimulating Hormone
Stimulates sperm production
Secondary Sex Characteistics
Deepens voice, more facial and body hair growth, thickening of skin, more muscle mass and strength, more bone mass, more sex drive
