Male Reproductive System Flashcards
What does the system consist of
Testes; tube system; 3 glands and a penis
What is the male sex organ
testes
Explain the function of each part of the system
Testes - contain highly coiled very long tubules; produce sperm and sex hormones
Epididymis - store sperm and allows them to mature ( 5m )
Vas deferens - propels sperm to urethra by peristalsis
Glands:
Prostate - produces fluid which activates sperm
Cowpers - protect sperm by neutralising acidity of urethra and acts as a lubricant
Seminal vesicles - produces seminal fluid with nutrients and enzymes for sperm ( fructose thus give sperm energy)
Other:
Ejaculatory duct - muscular contractions force semen through urethra
Urethra - tube through which urine and semen pass out of body
Seminiferous tubules - contains germinal epithelium that gives rise to sperm
Scrotum - pouch outside body that protects and maintains a lower temp ( 2-3’C lower than body temp)
for optimal sperm prod
Penis - transfers semen into vagina
Where is testosterone produced
Interstitial cells between seminiferous tubules called the cells of Leydig
When does testosterone start being produced
puberty ( 11-15 )
Name the changes in the development of the secondary male characteristics
- Encourages sperm maturation
- Makes a male more masculine
- Enhances muscle devel.
- Controls devel and functioning of prostrate gland
- Devel male sex organs and maintains secondary characteristics
