Evolution 3 Flashcards
1
Q
HOW DOES ANTIBIOTIC RESISTANCE
DEVELOP?
A
A sick person starts a course of antibiotics, starts feeling better and then stops taking the medicine. ie does NOT COMPLETE the full course or takes WRONG antibiotic for the infection.
- Due to natural variation and chance mutations, bacteria develop mutations providing resistance to the antibiotic and survive the initial dose of antibiotic.
The resistant bacteria reproduce rapidly and form a resistant population.
Therefore, incorrect use of antibiotics causes the rapid evolution of a new antibiotic resistant strain.
2
Q
hominid
A
refers to the extinct bipedal ancestors of humans as well as
modern humans & African apes
3
Q
SIMILARITIES of HUMANS and
AFRICAN APES
A
- Large Brain compared to body size
allows for varying degrees of memory, emotions, rational thought. - Eyes that look forwards with overlapping visual fields, for stereoscopic vision ie. allows accurate distance and 3D vision.
- Reduced /absent snout + small nose
rely more on sight than smell - Teeth variety of teeth for omnivorous diet
- Arms rotate freely in shoulder socket
allows wide range of forearm movement - Fingerprints ie. ridges more friction for
better grasping of objects. - Flat nails (not claws)
- Opposable thumbs for precision grip with index finger for to grasp branches; picking
up small objects + manipulating tools
