Q

Gross anatomy of testes

A
  • tunica vaginalis: serous membrane over testes
    • epididymis: sperm reservoir upon testes
    • spermatic cord: cable-like structure containing spermatic vein, artery, lymphatics, and nerves
    • vas deferens: tube from epididymis to ejaculatory duct entering prostate gland; passes into pelvic cavity through inguinal canal
    • cremaster muscle: skeletal muscle surrounding cord and testes; reacts to outside temp. changes

Q

microanatomy of testes

A
  1. semineferous tubules—> spermatozoa
    • activated at puberty by FSH
  2. interstitial cells—> testosterone

Q

Accessory reproductive glands

A
  1. seminal vesicles (x2):
    - posterior to bladder
    - produce 60% of seminal fluid
    - secrete into the ejaculatory duct, emptying into prostatic urethra
    - seldom contain sperm
  2. prostate gland:
    - surrounds prostatic urethra
    - contributes 30% of seminal fluid
  3. bulbourethral glands (cowper’s):
    - located inferior to prostate within urogenital diaphragm
    - discharge just prior to ejaculation
    - contribute an alkaline fluid to neutralize the penile urethra.
