Male reproduction Flashcards
Function and role of males?
recognize females in heat, produce and store sperm, form and deposit sperm into females.
what are the male reproductive system composed of? (6)
Testis
Epididymis
Ductus deferens
Scrotum
Penis & prepuce
4 accessory sex glands..
What are the 4 accessory sex glands?
1x Ampullae of ductus deferens
2x (vesical glands)Seminal vesicles
1x Prostate gland
2x Bulbourethral glands
Testes produce?
spermatozoa and testosterone
Where is the spermatozoa produced?
In the seminiferous tubules which lie in loops and take up most space of each testicle.
Where are the testicles located?
In the abdominal cavity during the fetal period and then move down to the scrotum through the inguinal canal
* The inguinal canal is often open so that the testicles can be pulled up into the abdomen in young animals when stimulated or cold
Tunica albuginea?
White connective tissue capsule surrounding the testicles
What types of tissue is testicular tissue made of?
yellowish, granular and shiny tissue
What are the 3 important cells in the seminiferous tubules?
Sertoli cells-embryonic cells
Leydig cells-endocrine cells(between seminiferous tubules)
Germ cells
Sertoli cells, function and location?
nurse function for germ cells and spermatozoa during develeopment.
Connect with eachother and form blood-testis barrier, which controls the growth environment of the spermatozoa and prevent sperm from penetrating supporting tissue.
On the base of the seminiferous tubules and extend into the center.
They aso divide the seminiferous tubules in 2 compartments.
What are the 2 compartments?
Basal compartment and adluminal compartment
Function of the basal compartment?
communicate with interstitial fluid and provide space for germinal epithelial cells.
Function of the adluminal compartment?
This is the space between sertoli cells, it communicates centrally with the lumen of the tubule.
Leydig cells, location and function?
In the connective tissue surrounding the seminiferous tubules. Produce testosteroneand other male hormones when luteinizing hormone is present.
Are not heat sensitive and therefore function normally in cryptorchids.
Functions of testosterone?
Stimulate sperm maturation
stimulate the gonads to produce semen
Necessary for development of sexual characteristics and normal mating behavior.
