Q

Where is the spermatozoa produced?

A

In the seminiferous tubules which lie in loops and take up most space of each testicle.

6
Q

Where are the testicles located?

A

In the abdominal cavity during the fetal period and then move down to the scrotum through the inguinal canal
* The inguinal canal is often open so that the testicles can be pulled up into the abdomen in young animals when stimulated or cold

Q

Sertoli cells, function and location?

A

nurse function for germ cells and spermatozoa during develeopment.
Connect with eachother and form blood-testis barrier, which controls the growth environment of the spermatozoa and prevent sperm from penetrating supporting tissue.

On the base of the seminiferous tubules and extend into the center.
They aso divide the seminiferous tubules in 2 compartments.

Q

Function of the adluminal compartment?

A

This is the space between sertoli cells, it communicates centrally with the lumen of the tubule.

Q

Leydig cells, location and function?

A

In the connective tissue surrounding the seminiferous tubules. Produce testosteroneand other male hormones when luteinizing hormone is present.
Are not heat sensitive and therefore function normally in cryptorchids.

Q

Functions of testosterone?

A

Stimulate sperm maturation
stimulate the gonads to produce semen
Necessary for development of sexual characteristics and normal mating behavior.

16
Q

Germ cells?

A

Precursors to the formation of gametes (sperm and egg cells)
Are in 5 development stages and end as mature gametes.

17
Q

What are the 2 stages of spermatogenesis?

A

Spermatocytogenesis
Spermiogenesis

18
Q

function of epididymis and location?

A

Move sperm cells from the testes to the ductus deferens, absorb liquid, sperm maturation and storage.

Attached to and along the testicles, covered by peritoneum (tunica vaginalis).

19
Q

What are the 3 parts of the epididymis?

A

Caput (head), corpus (cody), cauda (tail)

20
Q

Urethra

A

Runs from the bladder/ductus deferens and exits at the end of the penis
* Transfer both urine and semen
* Here the sperm concentrate from the testicles mixes with seminal fluid that comes from the accessory sex glands
