Male Redproductive System Flashcards
Function of testes
Produce gametes and testosterone
Function of Epididymis
Sperm are stored there to mature and become fully mobile. Sperm pass along here to the vas deferens.
Function of vas deferens
Carries sperm from testicle to urethra.
Function of seminal vesicle
Secretes seminal fluid.
Function of prostate gland.
Releases semen into the urethra
Function of urethra
Duct which carries semen and urine from the bladder
Describe the parts of sperm
- nucleus
- acrosome (contains enzymes)
- neck (contains mitochondria)
- cytoplasm
- flagellum (use atp to propel the sperm)
Outline the route taken from the testes by the sperm as it leaves the body
1st. Sperm leaves the testes and travel down sperm duct
2nd. Sperm travels through the glands
3rd. Glands provide sperm with food so they have energy
4th. The sperm duct joins the urethra, which carries the sperm out of the body.
How many chromosomes does each gamete contain
23
What is the role of the seminal vesicles
Secrete a thick, clear fluid like mucus that nourishes the sperm.
What is the role is the Cowper’s gland
Secretes a lubricant for sperm
Where is sperm produced
In the seminiferous tubules in the testes. There about 1000 in each testis.
What is the interestitial cell and where is it found m
Produces male hormone testosterone and is found in the seminiferous tubules.
Why do the testes hang outside the abdominal cavity
So that the sperm do not overheat
What is the 1st stage of spermatogenesis
MULTIPLICATION
• primordial germ cells divide several times by mitosis to produce spermatogonia
