Female Reproductuve Systen Flashcards
Function of vagina
A canal linking the cervix of the uterus to the outside of the body
Function of cervix
Opening through which the foetus exists during childbirth
Function of uterus
Organ which provides protection and support for the embryo and foetus before birth
Function of Fallopian tube
Tubes connecting the ovaries and the uterus. The ovum travels down the Fallopian tube during ovulation
Function of ovaries
Organs which produce ova and secrete hormones
What is oogenesis
Process to produce an ovum in the ovary
Where does oogenesis occur
Occurs in the ovary of the developing foetus
What is the first stage of oogenesis
MULTIPLICATION
Primordial germ cells in the epithelium of the ovary form oogonia by a series of mitotic divisions.
What is the second stage of oogenesis
GROWTH
Oogonia undergo further mitotic devisions to form primary oocytes.
Each primary oocyte is surrounded by what
follicle cells. Together they form the primary follicle.
What is the 3rd stage of oogenesis
MATURATION
from puberty a few primary follicle cells mature each month but only one will mature fully.
What happens to the primary follicle during oogenesis
Grows large to form an ovarian follicle. This secretes follicular fluids. The mature follicle is called a GRAAFIAN FOLLICLE.
How is the secondary oocyte produced
Through meiosis I
When is the secondary oocyte produced
If the ovum is penetrated by a sperm cell. Meiosis II completes and the egg cell becomes a mature ovum.
What is the function of polar bodies
Discard the extra haploid sets of chromosomes that have resulted as a consequence of meiosis.
