How long is a male catheter?

What is used to measure catheter size?
Ch or Charriere
One charier is 0.33mm- 12 Ch is 4mm
When would a three way catheter be used?
If suspecting clot retention
What are the different catheter matterials?
Latex
PVC
Silicone
How long can each type of catheter material be left in for?
PVC- used for intermittent self catheterisation
Latex- up-to 4 weeks
Silicone- up-to 12 weeks
What advice should you give to patients after inserting a catheter?
Avoid touching it and ensure good personal hygiene
Wash your hands before handling anything
If you experience any pain, burning, redness or unusual sensations alert your nurses
Ensure your foreskin is not left retracted
Keep bag below the level of the waist
What is it vital to ensure about the foreskin in these patients?
It is not left retracted as this can lead to paraphimosis
what must be documented after inserting a catheter?
Keep the stickers from the back of the catheter packet and stick these in the notes
Date and time of insertion Any complications during insertion Indication Volume, colour and presence of blood in residual urine Document advice to patient regarding foreskin, burning, itching, pain redness and good hygiene Size and material of catheter Expected removal date Volume used to inflate the balloon
How often should the catheter bag be changed?
After 5-7 days
How long must you give for the instillagel to take effect?
At least 5 minutes
What is important to prep before starting catheterisation?
Prep the syringes of water and instillagel
Attach the catheter to the catheter bag
What allergies must be checked for catheterisation?
Latex
Clorhexidine
Lidocaine
Use a water based lubricant if needed
