Male and Female Physiology Flashcards
What are the female reproductive hormones?
Gonadotropin releasing hormone.
Gonadotropins - FSH and LH.
Steroid hormones - Oestrogen, Progesterone and Testosterone.
What are the feedback mechanisms of Oestrogen and Progesterone?
Majority of cycle they operate a negative feedback system on the hypothalamus and the pituitary.
During the mid-cycle Oestrogen exerts a positive feedback on the hypothalamus to trigger the LH surge.
What is the contents of a follicle?
Egg
Theca cells
Granulosa Cells
When does ovulation occur after the LH surge?
36 hours
What do granulosa cells release?
Oestrogen
What do theca cells release?
Inhibin - inhibits FSH production.
How does progesterone affect the endometrium?
Makes it thicker and increases its vasculature and glands, preparing it for potential implantation.
If no fertilisation occurs, how long does the corpus luteum last?
14 days
