Economic effects of sea level rise.
Tourism visiting the area will decrease. Fishing will decrease due to the change in temperature killing most of the fish. The Maldivian economy relies greatly on tourism (28%) and fishing (20%).
Social effects.
Many people will be forced to move. Moving will also mean no jobs. Increased erosion will destroy houses which could also lead to a mass evacuation by 2100.
Environmental effects.
Beach erosion will occur, with stronger storms. The stronger storms will lead to coral being destroyed and with only 20% of the islands lying above 1m above sea level by 2050 most islands will be submerged.
Political effects.
Money will have to be raised for island management to prevent erosion, but the Maldivian economy cannot pay for these defences.
Responses to sea level rise.
The Maldives has two likely options abandon islands or build defences. So far the Japanese government has funded the building of some defences and building up of islands.
Describe the location of the Maldives.
The Maldives are in the Indian Ocean and consist of 1200 islands.
How much did Japan pay for a sea wall?
