Lyme Regis Coastal Defences Flashcards
Why is Lyme Regis prone to cliff collapse?
The town is in the south west of England meaning it receives waves with a long fetch from across the Atlantic as this is the direction of the prevailing wind. Also the area is made of sedimentary rock layers.
What process occur to cause the cliff collapse?
The erosional processes of hydraulic action, solution and abrasion. Also freeze-thaw weathering of the layers of sedimentary rocks aids cliff collapse.
How has the area of coastline around Lyme Regis been protected?
Huge amounts of money has been spent protecting the area of coastline since 1990. Beaches have been replenished, rock armour has been added to the east side of the harbour and placed in front of the £20m sea wall. Finally two masonry groynes have been placed to stop LSD.
What impact has coastal management had on Lyme Regis?
Increases in tourism due to beaches which has boosted the local economy. However tourism brings traffic and noise with it which can displease the locals. Also the masonry groynes starve beaches further west of sand.
