Q

How does subsitent farming cause tropical deforestation

A

Subsistent farmers usually clear land using slash and burn techniques to cut down trees.

Increase in population has lead to higher levels of unsustainable land clearing as demand for land for farmers is increasing

Less time is being left for rainforest regeneration and slash and burn techniques can cause wildfires which can spread and result in more deforestation.

Q

How does commercial farming increase deforestation

A

Lots of areas of land has been cleared for palm oil plantations. Plant owners receive 10 year tax incentives to produce palm oil.

Q

Economic development in Malaysia

A
  • mining, farming, hydroelectric power and logging provides jobs to locals which increases incomes. Also provides valuable goods and services to the country in the form of construction materials. Energy and food help generate profit and development.
  • products such as palm oil, rubber and tropical hardwoods can be used in trading.
  • Companies working in tropical rainforests have to pay taces which supports public services and develop the country
  • Better transport links to tropical rainforests help the tourism industry ad connects rural areas to urban areas, increasing the opportunity for further development.

Q

Economic long term costs

A
  • environmental degradation such as soil erosion can cost a lot to fix, meaning environmental impacts of these activities may be very costly in the future
  • pollution of water sources through mining and other industrial industries can be costly
  • climate change brought by deforestation will have more damaging effects on farming when climate is too hot and dry to produce crops.
  • Tourism industry may be negatively affected as areas become less biodiversity
  • Some areas may not be given out loans or give out sanctions to areas that aren’t managing their rainforests properly

Q

Mining opportunities in the Thar desert

A
  • the desert has valuable resources of feldspar, phosphorite, gypsum and kaolin. these are used to produce a range of things from cement to fertilisers and are therefore valuable.
  • Limestone and marble is quarried which can be used for building and producing cement

Q

Energy generation in the thar desert

A
  • Produced using solar panels. this energy is used to clean water supplies contaminated with salt. Wind energy is also used to generate electricity. Jaisalmer wind farm has 75 wind turbines which have the capacity to produce 60 megawatts of electricity.
17
Q

Farming opportunities thar desert

A

Irrigation ( channeling of water from rivers and streams into fields) has made commercial farming available. producing crops such as wheat and cotton has created many jobs and generated income for the local economy

18
Q

Tourism opportunities in the Thar desert

A
  • The thar desert national park attracts many visitors who want to see some of the 120 species found there. Tourism creates many jobs for local people
19
Q

Extreme temperature challenge in the Thar desert

A
  • temperatures in the Thar desert can reach up to 50 degrees Celsius in summer months. this makes it hard for people to farm, work in mines or as tourist guides which makes development difficult.
20
Q

Water supply in the Thar desert challenge

A

Only 120-240 mm on rainfall per year means water must be used sensibly and sustainably. Without water, the development of mining, farming and tourism and therefore the economy world would not be possible. Some parts of the desert have experienced over-irrigation which has caused water logging. The water then evaporates off the surface leaving a layer of salt making it difficult to grow crops

21
Q

Inaccessibility challenges in the thar desert

A
  • the desert covered an area of 200,000 square km. Most of the desert is inaccesible due to the extreme environmental conditions and poor infrastructure.many people visit jaisalmer as it is accessible. therefore inaccessibility to other parts has made a big difference between rich and poor
