Industrial decline in the 20th century, caused due to an increase in manufacturing abroad, closure of many inner city ports and rise in tertiary and quaternary industries.

- lottery grants helped to improve the area of Stokes Croft, the money had been used t9o redevelop buildings, attract n ew businesses and create green spaces
- artists are used in public to make the area more appealing
- new music venues, independent shops and nightclubs have opened in the area = improving the area’s environment
