Why does deforestation lead to flooding?
Trees intercept the water, water that infiltrates will just flow into river. Without trees, infertile soil can’t absorb more water. Brings nutrients and runs off into river. Soil is put in the river making it less deep with more water leading to flooding.
Name 3 activites which are damaging the rainforest in Malaysia
(all options given)
Logging
Mining
Fires
Hydro-electric power
Transmigration
Commercial plantation
How did Mining damage the rainforest?
Areas of rainforest need to be cleared to allow mines to be set up. Mining sometimes leads to pollution of land and rivers.
How did Fires damage the rainforest?
Some caused by lightning. Some used to clear space. Slash and burn agriculture is when people burn trees to get space for growing crops.
How did transmigration damage the rainforest?
Poor people were encouraged to move from urban areas to countryside to relieve pressure in cities - transmigration. Lots of rainforest cut down to provide space
How did the need for Hydro-Electric power damage the rainforest?
Lots of landed flooded to create a huge dam for HEP. 230km of rainforest cut down. Subsistence farmers who farm only to feed themselves got kicked out of their area.
How did Logging damage the rainforest?
Malaysia in 1980 was the biggest exporter of tropical wood. To keep up with demand, clear felling (all trees in certain area cut down) was very common. Led to destruction of forest habitat.
How did commercial plantation damage the rainforest?
Malaysia major producer of palm oil + rubber. Forests cleared to build rubber plantations. Malaysia second larges tproducer of palm oil. Rainforests also cut down to make into plantations.
