Mosquito nets impregnated with permethrin
DEET 20-50%
- suitable for >2 months
- avoid ingestion
- suitable for pregnancy and breastfeeding (clean before feeding)
- apply DEET after sunscreen (can reduces SPF if sunscreen - use high SPF)
Malarone
Atovaquone + Proguanil
Before Travel: 1-2 days
Dosage: OD
After Travel: 1 week
Maximum Use: 1 year
Chloroquine
Before Travel: 1 week
Dosage: once a week
After Travel: 4 weeks
Maximum Use: long-term
Proguanil
Before Travel: 1 week
Dosage: OD
After Travel: 4 weeks

Mefloquine
Before Travel: 2-3 weeks
Dosage: once a week
After Travel: 4 weeks
Maximum Use: 1 year
Doxycycline
Before Travel: 1-2 days
Dosage: OD
After Travel: 4 weeks
Maximum Use: 2 years
When to be worry if you is infected with Malaria?
Illness occurring within 1 year, especially 3 months of return
Patient groups aware of Malaria
Asplenia
Pregnancy
- avoid travelling to malarious region
- chloroquine and Proguanil can be given
- take 5mg folic acid
Malaria and warfarin
Start treatment 2-3 weeks before departure (INR should stable before departure)
- measure INR before starting, 7 days after starting and after completing course
