⭐️Fever
Fatigue / flu-like
Inc bleeding risk (DIC)
⭐️Hepatosplenomegaly & Juandice
GI: abd pain, diarrhea, N/V
Cerebral malaria: confusion
Malaria subtypes
🔹Tertian malaria (P. vivax / P. ovale)
• Fever q48 hrs
🔹Quartan malaria (P. malaria)
• Fever q72 hrs
🔹Falciparum malaria
• Fever spike irregular
• Most severe form
Malaria diagnosis:
Thick blood smear “initial”
Thin blood smear “confirm, P. Subtype”
✨Negative with high suspicion »Repeat smear q8hrs for 48 hrs
Malaria treatment:
(Sensitive): Chloroquine
(Resistant): Mefloquine
Atovaquone-proguanil
Life threatening 🧠: IV quinidine or artesunate
P. vivax / P. ovale : +Primaquine
Malaria prophylaxis
Atovaquone-proguanil
