malaria Flashcards
What are the physical causes of malaria
The disease is spread from person to person by the female Anopheles Mosquito. The mosquito carries the parasite and passes it on when feeding of people when it bites them
- warm tropical temperatures 15-40C required for the mosquito to survive
- Areas of still water/marshland is required for the mosquitoes to lay their eggs in and breed
- wet/humid climate needed so water is available
- Areas of shade from the sun (trees, bushes etc) so the mosquitoes can rest after feeding and digest blood
What are some human causes that lead to an increased amount of malaria cases
- villages built near rivers and lakes (still water) for water supply
- Dams built to store water creates still water for the mosquitoes to breed
- irrigation systems used for farming often leave still water for mosquito breeding
- por sanitation in shanty towns creates open sewers where mosquitoes can breed
- lack of health education means many people don’t know how to prevent malaria spreading
What are some main effects of malaria
- millions of people affected in poor countries: Main symptoms andre nausea, sickness, fever, headache and fatigue (like a bad flu)
- children are the worst affected group and million of children die ever year form malaria
- many adults who have the disease are sick for years and are never fully cured (long term illness)
What are the general problems caused by the effects of malaria.
- Many people are too weak to work so the industry and economy are affected.
2.People can’t work on their farms so they have food shortages and dietary problems
3.families spend all their money on treatment and end up in extreme poverty
4.Government has to pay for healthcare and sickness benefit so has less to spend on education/development etc.
Solutions to stop malaria by destroying the mosquitoes
-Destroy breeding grounds by draining marshes and lakes
- spreading oil or egg white on breeding grounds to suffocate the larvae
-introduce fish to still water who will eat the larvae e.g muddy loach
-cut down areas of shade so they have nowhere to rest and digest blood
- spray breeding areas and villages with insecticide( fly poison) eg DDT
Solutions through education to stop malaria
-Sleep inside mosquito nets to prevent being bitten in the night.
-use insect repellents to reduce no. of bites
-cover bare skin with clothes to reduce no. of bites.
-cover windows and doors with wire mesh/nets to keep mosquitoes out of homes
What are the drugs you can use to prevent/counter malaria
prevent - Latium, malerone
cure - quinine or ACT therapy
