Making Salts Flashcards
How are salts made
Neutralization of an acid with a base
Step one
Measure out the sulphuric acid (40cm cubed) into a measuring cylinder
Step 2
Put the sulphuric acid into a beaker and heat it with the bunsen burner opened half way for 30 seconds
Step 3
Add the copper oxide into the beaker
Step 4
Stir it with a glass rod, straight away there will be a chemical reaction
Step 5
Leave it to settle and you should start to see the water turn blue
Step 6
Black, unreacted copper (excess copper) needs to be removed from the copper sulphate to ensure the crystals are pure
Step 7
Use a filter and a funnel to seperate the copper and the copper sulphate
Step 8
Put the solution into an evaporating basin and heat it to dry the crystals, don’t make the crystals too hot or the give of a toxic gas
